from Moira Phippen of Visual Nonsense, about “Letting It All Out,” poetry by Jant Kuypers, the last Visual Nonsense at Swing State 03/05/11: Janet Kuypers shares with us her novel performance art, a mxture of poetry and video dynamics...     In show #3 from Janet Kuypers opening up the evening with a 6 PM start time for her one hour time slot (with blog listings at chicago poetry dot org) for her show on the final evening in the “Visual Nonsense” series of video evenings at Swing State ($6 cover to enter Swing State’s hookah lounge; Visual Nonsense will move from Swing State to another location after the 03/05/11 show) Kuypers decided that because this was at a new venue with a different audience for her (since she is known as a Chicago poet), she would look into her well of well-known classic longer pieces of writing to share in this new form... This is the first time most of these pieces were read while huge video projections accompany her television-projected readings (along with both music and drawing videos). Some videos were shot in the snow for this live show; additional electric charges were recorded for additional performances in the show as well. This show will prove to be an eclectic mix of truly thought-provoking pieces on many different topics for everyone attending this live show.     One more element in this last Kuypers show at Swing State’s Visual Nonsense evening makes this event at the final performance of Visual Nonsense in Lake Villa different:     Kuypers originally intended to use a chalk board to draw elements of her performance during the show, but the new chalk on her custom-made chalk board wouldn’t erase properly (or rapidly enough) for the live performance... So Kuypers then opted to use a marker board so she could draw her poetry out in different colors during her performance as well. But in tests, no videocameras could capture the writing on the marker board (so nobody could see the drawings)... Well, that’s what pracice is for (to find something that works when trying to display new art in a form never done before in a live show like this), so Kuypers videotaped her drawing while reading in studio, then mixed and sampled these instantly created freestyle drawings (and instantly erased drawings) in response to her poetry. These drawing videos were displayed on a separate projected screen during this live performance. These drawings on an additional projection screen made this a genuinely unique live show (and she’s never drawn her poetry, so this really turned out to be something to watch). Everyone at Swing State was even stunned that they had two computers with two projectior and two screens to show off work, all while also having live video on a large television, and a third computer for the audio in this live show.     Speaking of music, pre-recorded music from The DMJ Art Connection (Nashville TN, with music from their first CD, The DMJ Art Connection Disc One), the Bastard Trio (Madison WI) and the JoAnne Pow!ers Trio (Madison WI, both with music of the performance art CD set Fusion), the Penthouse Playboys (Chicago, sampled from Kuypers’ “Chaotic Radio” radio show #73), the HA!man of South Africa (with music from his album Beauty, of the Kuypers performance art CD set Burn Through Me), and final guitar strummings from John Yotko will be playing during her readings as well.     Below is a linked list of all of the pieces performed through this show.
